Health Reasons

At Shetler Family Dairy, we make it our mission to bring you the healthiest, tastiest milk products from happy cows. But why should you drink milk? In addition to being delicious, dairy foods like milk, yogurt, and ice cream provide bone-building calcium along with eight other nutrients important for a healthy lifestyle.

A balanced diet containing dairy foods is associated with all kinds of health bonuses, including a reduced risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure. Drinking milk with butterfat helps to properly absorb good fat-soluble vitamins. Milk is one of nature’s most complete foods because it is made up of sugar, protein, and fat components.

Our philosophy is that healthy soil produces healthy food, which produces healthy animals and people. Pasture grazed cows produce milk higher in:

  • CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) – a good fatty acid shown to offer a host of health benefits, including lowering cholesterol and triglycerides, strengthening the immune system, lower insulin resistance and enhancing muscle growth.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids – good fats that reduce inflammation rather than promote it like the omega-6 fats in conventional grain-fed dairy products
  • Vitamin E
  • Fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, and K

Keep it Cool!

Raw milk cannot be bottled and sold in the state of Michigan. Pasteurization is required by law, and we use Low-Temperature Vat Pasteurization. Milk contains beneficial bacteria and enzymes which aid digestion. These beneficials are needed to help our bodies stay healthy. The hotter you heat the milk, the more damage is done. Most large processors, including some organic dairies, use Ultra High Pasteurization because it is faster. At Shetler Dairy, we do everything we can to keep the milk as close to the natural state as possible.

Say No to Homogenization!

Real milk contains cream particles and when allowed to sit, the cream rises to the top. In its natural state, your body can digest the cream and use the fat for energy, and the nutrients your body needs. Homogenization breaks down the cream particles to the same size as milk particles. Therefore, the fat is absorbed through your stomach lining and sent directly to the arteries. So just say “no” to homogenization! For more information visit http://www.westonaprice.org/.

No Antibiotics or Hormones Used!

Whatever you give a cow comes out in the milk. Any amount of medication in milk is too much. Instead, we use vitamins, minerals, probiotics and homegrown non-GMO feed to boost the cow’s immune systems naturally.
